Engine oil is the most important fluid in your vehicle. It carries valuable information about the engine's state of health, and with a little knowledge you can learn to "read" these signals even without professional instruments.
The Glass Test: What You Need
For this basic test you need:
- A clear glass (glass or plastic)
- A sheet of white paper
- Natural light (ideal) or an LED flashlight
- Your vehicle's oil dipstick
How to Proceed
Step 1: Taking the Sample
With the engine cold (at least 2 hours of rest), pull out the oil dipstick and let 5-6 drops fall into the clear glass. Also note the level on the dipstick.
Step 2: Color Test
Place the glass on the white paper and observe the color of the oil:
- Light amber / Honey: Fresh oil, in excellent condition. Generally visible in the first 1,000-2,000 km after a change on petrol cars, much less so on diesel cars.
- Dark brown: Normal for oil with 5,000-8,000 km of use. The oil is doing its job, absorbing contaminants.
- Opaque black: The oil has exhausted its detergent capacity. It's time to change it, but this isn't necessarily a sign of a mechanical problem.
- Milky gray / Emulsion: WARNING. This appearance indicates the presence of water or coolant in the oil. It can be a sign of a compromised head gasket.
- Metallic reflections / Glitter: WARNING. Visible metal particles indicate abnormal internal wear (bearings, cams, rings).
Step 3: Consistency Test
Take a drop of oil between thumb and forefinger and assess:
- Slippery and fluid: Normal viscosity
- Grainy: Presence of solid contaminants — professional analysis required
- Very thin (like water): The oil may be diluted by fuel — an injector or injection system problem. The smell from fuel contamination is distinctive
Step 4: Smell Test
Sniff the oil in the glass:
- Normal petroleum smell: All good
- Strong burnt smell: The oil has been subjected to excessive temperatures
- Sweetish smell: Possible coolant contamination (ethylene glycol)
- Petrol smell: Fuel dilution
Step 5: Stain Test (Blot Test)
Let a drop of oil fall onto the white paper and wait 2 hours. The halo that forms tells you a lot:
- Dark center with a wide light halo: The oil still has good detergent properties
- Dark center with no halo: The oil is saturated with contaminants
- Uniform gray stain: A good sign, uniform dispersion
- Yellowish edges: Possible presence of acids — an oil change is urgent

The opacimeter measures the oil's transparency by means of a beam of light, quantifying the presence of suspended particles. It allows us to evaluate:
- Soot percentage: particularly critical in diesel engines, it indicates combustion efficiency
- Suspended metal particles: a sign of internal mechanical wear (cylinders, bearings, cams)
- Sludge and deposits: combustion residues and thermal degradation of the oil
- General state of contamination: an objective comparison between new and used oil with a numerical value
When to Worry
If your DIY test reveals one of these signals, take the vehicle to a professional:
- Milky gray oil
- Visible metal particles
- Persistent sweetish smell
- Oil level constantly rising (fuel dilution)
- Oil level constantly dropping (excessive consumption)
