Filters are among the most underrated components of a car. They cost little, are rarely seen and get changed "whenever it happens". And yet, a poor-quality filter can cause very serious — and often irreversible — damage to the engine. In this guide we explain why not all filters are the same and what you really risk by using the wrong product.
The Filter Isn't Just a Piece of Paper
Behind an oil filter or an air filter that costs an average of 10-15€ on the market are companies that have been investing in research and development for decades. It's not simply "a pleated sheet that traps dirt". Quality filters are engineered systems designed to:
- Trap impurities of microscopic size without reducing flow
- Withstand pressures even in the most demanding operating conditions
- Operate in hostile environments: humidity, extreme temperatures, aggressive chemical contaminants
- Maintain performance throughout the entire scheduled replacement interval
The difference between a 5€ filter and a 15€ one isn't the manufacturer's margin — it's the technology, the materials and the testing behind it.
The Oil Filter: When Saving Money Costs You Dearly
What Can Happen with a Cheap Oil Filter
A low-quality oil filter can present several critical problems:
Crumpling of the Filter Media
Under pressure — especially when cold, when the oil is thicker and the pump works harder — a cheap filter can literally crumple in on itself. When this happens, the filter media compresses, the pleats close up and the oil passes through without being filtered in any way. In the best case, it's like having no filter at all. The engine runs on dirty oil, loaded with metal particles and combustion residues that accelerate the wear of every internal component.
Filter Rupture
In the worst case, the filter can physically rupture. Fragments of the filter media or of the internal structure end up in the oil circuit, get drawn in by the pump and distributed throughout the engine. The consequences are easy to imagine:
- Blockage of the lubrication channels → oil starvation to the bearings
- Damage to the oil pump → pressure drop in the circuit
- Abrasion of surfaces → accelerated wear of cylinders, cams, bearings
- In extreme cases: engine seizure
The Bypass Valve
Quality filters integrate a calibrated bypass valve that opens when the filter is saturated, allowing the oil to keep circulating (unfiltered, but at least present). Cheap filters often have poorly calibrated or missing bypass valves — which means that when the filter clogs, the oil simply stops reaching where it's needed.
The Air Filter: Small Component, Big Consequences
Premature Clogging
A low-quality air filter can clog much earlier than expected. When the filter clogs, it restricts the airflow to the engine. The consequences:
- Unbalanced air/fuel mixture → incomplete combustion
- Increased fuel consumption and emissions
- Noticeable loss of power, especially under acceleration
- Greater buildup of deposits in the combustion chamber
Rupture and Passage of Impurities
An air filter that ruptures or fails to filter adequately is a far more serious problem. Dust, sand and microscopic particles enter directly into the engine. The damage can be devastating:
Turbo Damage
The hot wheel of the turbocharger works at extreme speeds — often over 100,000 rpm. At these speeds, even a particle of dust becomes a projectile. The turbine blades are absolutely unable to cope with any kind of impurity:
- Erosion of the blades → imbalance of the wheel → vibrations → bearing wear
- Damage to the floating bearings → excessive play → oil passage
- In severe cases: rupture of the wheel with fragments entering the engine
Cylinder Wear
The dust that gets past the air filter enters the combustion chamber and acts as an abrasive between pistons and cylinders:
- Scoring of the cylinder liners
- Accelerated wear of the piston rings
- Loss of compression
- Increased oil consumption
How to Choose the Right Filters
The rule is simple: know what you're buying. Not all 10€ filters are the same, and not all expensive filters are automatically better. Here's what to check:
- Manufacturer: Favour brands with proven experience in automotive filtration (Mann-Filter, Mahle, Bosch, Hengst)
- OEM specifications: The filter must meet or exceed the vehicle manufacturer's specifications
- Filter media: Mixed cellulose with synthetic fibres offers the best compromise between efficiency and flow
- Construction: Internal metal frame, quality rubber gaskets, anti-drainback valve (for oil filters)
