Tires are the most important component of a car when it comes to safety and comfort. Not the engine, not the brakes, not the electronics: the tires. Because they are quite simply the only element keeping us on the road.
A Pack of Cigarettes
Let's pause for a moment on a fact that few people know: a tire's contact patch — that is, the surface actually touching the asphalt at any given instant — is no bigger than a pack of cigarettes.
Four packs of cigarettes. That is all that separates a 1,500-2,000 kg vehicle from the asphalt. All that is responsible for:
- Braking grip: turning braking force into deceleration
- Traction under acceleration: transferring engine torque to the ground
- Lateral grip in corners: countering centrifugal force
- Ride comfort: absorbing the micro-irregularities of the road surface
- Aquaplaning: channeling water out from under the tread to maintain contact
When we consider that the safety of every passenger depends on those four rectangles of rubber, we realize just how important it is that they be in perfect condition.
The Condition of Your Tires: What to Check
Tread Wear
The legal wear limit is 1.6 mm of tread depth. But this is the absolute minimum — at 1.6 mm performance is already drastically reduced, especially in the wet:
- At 3 mm: wet-braking performance begins to degrade noticeably
- At 1.6 mm: the wet braking distance can increase by 40-50% compared to a new tire
- Below 1.6 mm: the tire is illegal and extremely dangerous
We recommend replacement at 3-4 mm of remaining tread, not at 1.6 mm.
Structural Damage
Tires must not show any kind of structural damage:
- Cuts or gashes on the sidewall: they compromise the integrity of the carcass
- Bulges or blisters (hernia): they indicate a break in the internal plies — the tire can blow out
- Irregular wear: it signals alignment problems, incorrect pressure or damaged suspension
- Abnormal vibrations: they can indicate internal deformation of the carcass
Structural damage cannot be repaired. The tire must be replaced.
The Production DOT: The Most Underrated Factor
What the DOT Is
Stamped on the sidewall of every tire is a DOT (Department of Transportation) code that includes the date of manufacture — the last 4 digits indicate the week and the year. For example: DOT 2523 = manufactured in the 25th week of 2023.
Why Age Matters More Than Tread
A tire ages even if it is never used. The plastic and elastic materials that make up the compound degrade over time due to:
- Oxidation: oxygen attacks the rubber's polymers, making it more rigid
- UV rays: they accelerate surface degradation
- Ozone: it creates micro-cracks on the surface (cracking)
- Thermal cycles: summer/winter accelerate the process
What Happens with an Old Tire
A tire that has passed 5-6 years (7 at most, no more) has materials that are no longer plastic. The compound has dried out, it has lost its original elasticity. The consequences:
- It does not deform correctly: the tire must deform to adapt to the ground and maximize the contact patch. A rigid tire has less grip.
- It does not absorb vibrations: an obvious loss of comfort, increased noise
- It does not handle stress: the enormous lateral (in corners) and longitudinal (under braking and acceleration) forces acting on the tire are no longer managed by the compound
- Sawtooth tread wear: the rigid tire does not "slide" uniformly over the asphalt but "hops" from one block to the next, creating a sawtooth pattern of wear that further reduces grip
- Risk of tread separation: in extreme cases, the carcass can separate from the belt — a catastrophic event at high speed
The production DOT must stay within 5-7 years. No more. Ever.
Quality: Why Not All Tires Are the Same
The Market for Cheap Tires
The market is full of very low-cost alternatives — Chinese, Korean, or unknown-brand tires that often cost half or a third of the premium brands. It is not a question of geographic origin: it is a question of investment in research and development.
The major manufacturers — Michelin, Continental, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Goodyear — invest hundreds of millions of euros in R&D every year, and have for decades. They develop proprietary compounds, tread patterns optimized with fluid-dynamics simulations, and carcass structures engineered for each application.
The result? The behavior is not the same. It is not an opinion — it is measurable.
The Numbers That Matter
Every car magazine and every independent body publishes comparative tire tests. The results are always the same:
- Wet braking: differences of 5-15 meters between premium and budget tires at the same speed
- Dry braking: differences of 2-5 meters
- Aquaplaning: onset speed 10-20% higher with premium tires
- Lateral grip: measurable differences in g of lateral acceleration
- Snow braking (winter tires): differences of up to 20 meters
Even a single meter makes the difference between a crash and a near miss. One meter is the difference between stopping in time and hitting the vehicle in front, between staying on the road and running off it.
The True Cost of Tires
We understand that tires are an expense. A set of mid-range tires costs 400-600€, a set of premium tires for SUVs or large sedans can reach 800-1,200€. But let's do a realistic calculation:
- A set of tires lasts on average 40,000-60,000 km with normal use
- This is equivalent to roughly 3-4 years of driving
- If you also have a set of winter tires, the life of each set extends to 7-8 years
- The price difference between a budget set and a premium set is about 200€ for mid-range tires, 400€ for high-end tires
200-400€ more, spread over 3-4 years of use, means 50-100€ a year of difference. Less than a euro a day for:
- Shorter braking distances — potentially life-saving
- Superior grip in the wet, in snow, in the dry
- Markedly better acoustic and ride comfort
- More uniform and predictable wear
- Optimized rolling resistance → lower fuel consumption
Don't cut corners on tires. It is the best money you can spend on your car.
