BMW xDrive all-wheel drive is an advanced AWD solution, designed to combine the safety of four driven wheels with the driving pleasure typical of rear-wheel-drive BMWs. How xDrive works: the electronically controlled multi-plate clutch
The heart of the system is an oil-bath multi-plate clutch integrated into the transfer case, located downstream of the gearbox. This clutch is operated by an electromechanical actuator (servomotor) which, by varying the pressure on the plates, precisely regulates the share of torque sent to the front axle.
The xDrive control unit constantly processes data from numerous sensors: individual wheel speeds, steering angle, lateral acceleration, yaw rate and accelerator position. Based on this information, the system reacts within a fraction of a second, shifting torque to where it is needed even before wheelspin becomes noticeable to the driver.
Variable torque distribution
In normal driving, xDrive usually maintains a rear-biased distribution, so as to preserve BMW's characteristic driving dynamics. When the sensors detect a loss of grip — on wet or snow-covered surfaces, or under hard acceleration — the system seamlessly transfers a greater share of torque to the front, up to the point of balancing traction between the two axles. The split is not fixed but dynamic: it changes constantly according to the situation.
A rear-biased character
Maintaining, under normal conditions, a clear bias toward the rear axle is no accident. It is what allows a BMW xDrive to preserve the "push from behind" sensation and the cornering naturalness typical of rear-wheel drive, reducing the understeer tendency that characterizes many front-biased all-wheel-drive systems. On corner exit, the ability to anticipate sending torque to the front instead improves traction and stability.
Integration with DSC and stability control
xDrive does not work in isolation: it is in constant dialogue with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and the traction control systems. In the event of oversteer or understeer, the integrated management can combine torque distribution between the axles with targeted braking on individual wheels, helping to bring the car back onto the intended line. On several models the system also coordinates with dynamic control functions designed to refine cornering behavior.

- Transfer case: checking for any leaks, oil condition and level, and abnormal noises.
- xDrive actuator (clutch servomotor): checking correct operation and the absence of play or wear, among the most frequent causes of all-wheel-drive malfunction.
- Electronic diagnostics: reading the control unit to identify any AWD-related fault codes and confirming that no warning lights are active.
- Halfshafts, joints and differentials: checking boots, constant-velocity joints and the condition of the front and rear differentials.
